Captain Gregory M. Tylawsky is a (U.S. Coast Guard) licensed Unlimited Tonnage Master Mariner and California State Licensed Marine Pilot (retired 2021). With over 40 years of maritime experience, he rose through the ranks as Third, Second, and Chief Officer before serving as Master with Maersk Line, Ltd. for seven years, commanding U.S. flag containerships on global trade routes. In 2003, he received the U.S. Merchant Marine Expeditionary Award as Master of the first U.S. flag ship to enter the Persian Gulf declared War Zone during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2007, he transitioned to Piloting following competitive examinations.

Captain Tylawsky has piloted, docked, and undocked thousands of vessels over thirteen years, in the 10 ports of the San Francisco Bar Pilots’ grounds, across varied maritime environments under often demanding conditions. His blend of Unlimited Master expertise and an MBA from the University of Southern California equips him to provide unmatched consultancy and expert witness services in a global arena. Recognized for simplifying maritime complexities, he offers clear insights for Admiralty and non-maritime audiences alike, cementing his authority in maritime disputes and legal matters in both U.S. and U.K. jurisdictions.

A Fellow of the Nautical Institute (London) and Chair of its U.S. West Coast Branch, Captain Tylawsky earned the Chartered Master Mariner designation from the Honourable Company of Master Mariners in 2023. He is currently pursuing a Diploma in International Maritime Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) in London. With honors including National Maritime Security Advisory Committee service and contributions to BBC & PBS documentaries “Why Ships Crash” and “Baltimore Bridge Collapse,” his firm provides expert guidance on global high-profile maritime incidents through Maritime Expert Group, Inc.
